Monday, Monday / So good to me...

"Solicitude"--finished last week

Woohoo! Back at work and all went well. Returned home and played in the studio for a couple of hours. Rich cooked. After supper I graded (some) papers. I've spent the last couple of hours visiting a blogs. What more can a quilter ask for?

If I haven't visited you recently, I'm sorry. I have been trying, but now there are so many great blogs that I'm struggling to keep up. If you have a system, I'd sure appreciate knowing how you manage to keep up with reading and responding to all of the bloggers you've come to know.

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Puritans

Yes, sure. Puritans deserve a moment. Besides I've been grading papers about the Puritans and The Scarlet Letter. Thank goodness that is over with, but it meant missing Sunday Quilt Inspiration. I'm trying to catch up before too many people realize it!

John Knox (c. 1514 – 24 November 1572) was a Scottish clergyman and a leader of the Protestant Reformation who brought reformation to the church in Scotland.In Geneva he met John Calvin, from whom he gained experience and knowledge of Reformed theology and Presbyterian polity. On his return to Scotland he led the Protestant Reformation in Scotland.:

I think I’m finished. Initially, I thought I would fill in some of the grey, but I kind of like the light, filigree look it has now. Gotta go find a frame for it.:

I bet you thought it would be difficult to find some pins for this motif. I did have to search under both Puritans and The Scarlet Letter. Pinterest has mostly embroidered samplers or sampler quilts. But I also found a few quilts that could easily have served the Puritans' needs and aesthetics.

And so now, the papers are graded, Sunday Quilt Inspiration is posted (sorry for the tardy) and I get to go sew, unless the power goes out and, considering the weather, that likely will happen. No matter, I will sew until it does! Have a great week, everyone.

Grisdela Beginnings with a Periwinkle Finish

I have been working on a different kind of quilt lately. I haven't said much, because well, what if it didn't work out, you know? lol I hate to admit defeat. While in Houston I met Cindy Grisdela and purchased her book, "Artful Improv," which she signed. After reading it through a couple of times, I've moved on to rereading bits and pieces as I work.

I decided to make a quilt in the manner of Cindy's art quilts. If you know me, though, you know that I can't just follow a pattern: I have to make it my own.

So while this quilt started out using a "Complementary Color Recipe," it finished a little differently. I still am not certain that I want to call it an art quilt, but I'm feeling pretty good about it anyway.

I started with red, orange, and yellow solids and tossed in what was supposed to be just a bit of Kona Periwinkle.

Periwinkle usurped the quilt somehow. My idea was that the Kona Bison would work with the hot colors and the Periwinkle would add a bit of sparkle.

Oops on the periwinkle, but maybe not too much. I love the color, and it does a great job of breaking up the brown and adding asymmetrical lines that allowed for many quilting motifs.

Basically I used the lines as borders for each motif. At the beginning I was going to stick with circles, but that didn't last long. Ha! Once all of the bison sections were quilted, I changed my needle thread to a soft yellow and quilted diagonal lines that matched the one periwinkle line in each improv block.

Putting on the binding was just as much fun, because when periwinkle takes over, it messes with all parts of the quilt. Check out the corners.

Three of them have a little periwinkle trim. It is meant to look like the periwinkle dips in and out of the binding at will. Again, just taking over.

This quilt is titled "Solicitude" because I still feel a little uneasiness about it, which is unusual for me. It's entirely possible that the uneasiness I'm feeling has nothing to do with the quilt itself, but I have no idea why I feel this way. I suppose I'll just go with it.

Happy Thanksgiving! I understand that not all of my readers celebrate Thanksgiving the way we do here in the U.S., I think that most of the world celebrates or gives thanks for their blessings.
