Pin It Weekly #172

Now's the time to visit the Bloggers' Quilt Festival if you haven't done so already! Goodness, the quilts are fabulous. It's an honor just being able to put a couple of my quilts in the festival. Of course, it's open to all bloggers, so there's that, but really to know that some of my "quilt heroes" also have quilts in the show is pretty awesome.

Chair...different textures & patterns.: Okay so enough gushing, already. There's some news on the quilting front: Amanda Jean Nyberg, who we all know and love as one of the authors of Sunday Morning Quilts, has a new book coming out in February. It's titled No Scrap Left Behind, which is a play on the No Child Left Behind legislation, so it's pretty funny for those of us who are teachers.  Anyway, I just thought I'd share the exciting news. You should visit Amanda Jean's blog, Crazy Mom Quilts, and see for yourself what it's all about.

And now on to Pin It Weekly: I've been too busy with school (I think I say that every week...) but I did manage to get a little pinning in over the weekend. For one, I put a few more of my quilts up on my "TRUNK, SHOW" board. It occurred to me somehow that I hadn't added any of the more recent quilts.

That done, I pinned all manner of random stuff: from upholstery, to chickens, to baby lambs--aren't they just too cute?

✞Ecclesiastes 3:1-22-For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven✞Fall is definitely here and it's beginning to show in the leaves, the pumpkins, the Halloween decor....they are all out in full force.

Look at this little gray darling playing in the fall leaves. Our son rescued two kittens a few months ago and brought them to our house, "so all the grands can enjoy them." They are thriving and growing, and Richard and I have become attached. One looks very much like the kitten in this picture.

The other is yellowish with odd coloring on her ears, feet and tail. The poor thing was so ugly when we first got her that I named her Gizmo (from the Gremlins movie), but worm meds, food, and love made all the difference. Now that she's grown into her ears, she's just the cutest of kittens.

Everyone here in Louisiana is hoping, praying, for cooler weather. Here's hoping that your weather is cooling off or warming up, depending on what you need. And I suppose, that could mean some of you are seeing the beginning of  spring or are experiencing perfect weather!

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: AUTUMN

Fall has finally arrived, sort of.  It's much cooler--70+ instead of 90+ and, trust me on this, everyone is much happier.  The mosquitoes are horrid, thanks to all the rain we've gotten in the last few weeks.

Even swatting mosquitoes while on duty is better than sweating on duty, especially since I have morning duty. Those mean little devilish blood suckers can make for a miserable time out-of-doors.  However, a crisp cold snap of about 50 degrees will slow them for a few days.  And freezing temps will eradicate them for a few months.

I know many people think of autumn colors and warm and cozy (browns, maroons, earthy greens), but sometimes autumn can be really vibrant and bold.Oh, don't do a happy dance, we've fought them in the middle of winter before, but those times are rare and generally don't last long.

Since we are feeling like fall in the mornings, I thought a few pictures of pretty leaves might be in order.  After all, we'll soon be having huge family meals and celebrating Christmas.  We've got to stick autumn in somewhere, right?

These Pinterest photos are all supposed to have been taken in Louisiana and are on my "natural, trees" board.

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: l e a v e s

It's almost summertime here in Louisiana.  Based on the temperatures alone, we're already there. And as you can see of my screen capture from The Weather Channel, it's not getting any better.  The hot air and cold air meet and cause thunderstorms.

Maple leaves after an autumn showerEverything is already saturated and soggy, so more rain is not something we want or need.  You'd think that would cool the place down, but instead, the sun comes out and everything is boiling hot (almost in the literal sense).

One good outcome of all this rain and heat is that we have a tropical clime which helps everything to grow.  Trees, shrubs, weeds, and grass are happily getting tall, stretching out and putting on a multitude of leaves.

So LEAVES it is this week!  Be inspired...

This will be good for the Fall when we do leaf rubbings. We can now identify what we are rubbing. :-)

Be artful...
Use air-dry clay and fallen leaves to make mini bowls that are perfect for jewelry, keys, and other knick-knacks.

Find a paper napkin with fall leaves or other fall motifs and decoupage them onto the stones. It is so easy and the result looks great. Light colored stones are perfect for this project, but you can also paint darker stones white if you like.

But I can still tell you that every tree leaf was designed and colored (inks) on a book page. On the contour of each page were glued small tree branches to form a frame. The branches protruding from each side allow to hang the woolen strings that connect between them vertically frames. Then each "band" frames is attached to another large branch that serves as support.
