Farm to Fabric Challenge

This post is a challenge and a giveaway! American Made Brand has a great challenge going on and some lucky designers will have their quilts in the Houston Quilt Show!  Now this is a challenge worth taking.  Plus, it's for everybody who creates quilts from their own designs!

AMB wants to get the word out about its challenge, so they've asked several bloggers to spread the word and are offering this great tote as a giveaway prize .

You can help spread the word and have a chance to win this useful tote (without the veggies, of course).  Because time is running short, I'm going to ask you to blitz the internet: use whatever social media you have--Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, your blog, Flickr, LinkedIn, Reddit, StumbleUpon, 3rdRevolution, etc. You have three days, so hurry!  Entries close on July 30 at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening  I'll choose a winner.

Get out there and blitz, buzz, and bark! Now I need to know what you do, so come back to this post and leave a note. Every, yes every, time you write about this challenge you can come back and enter!  So if you share on Twitter, FB, and Flickr, you have three opportunities!  It's that easy.

The Particulars [or the rules]

• Any techniques may be used – piecing, applique’, embroidery, photo transfer, whole cloth or manipulated fabric, etc.
• You may submit at most two quilts for our consideration.  Quilts must be a minimum of 25” x 25” and must have hanging sleeves attached.
• Quilts must be made specifically for the challenge and must not have been published in books, calendars, magazines, newsletters, websites, blogs or any other form of publication prior to November 2014.
• Completed submissions with visuals must be received no later than Friday, August 15, 2014. 
• You will be notified no later than Friday, September 5, 2014, regarding quilts chosen to be included in this exhibit along with shipping instructions. 
• If selected, quilts will need to arrive in Houston no later than Wednesday, October 1, 2014.
• Quilts will be returned by the end of December 2014 if quilt does not travel, or arrangements made to have a quilt picked up at the conclusion of the show.
• If you agree to allow your quilt to travel, your quilt will be returned by the end of August 2015.
• Open to US residents.

Notification by – September 5, 2014
Accepted quilts arrive in Houston by – October 1, 2014
Quilts returned to owner – December 2014, or August 2015 if traveling.

Pin It Wednesday #5

Already this is the fifth week of my Pinterest posts.  I'm still pinning, only now I am able to convince myself that I'm doing it for you!  It's just fun and games, really.  I love looking at quilts and quilting, and the photos give me many--way too many--ideas.

This week is not about quilting, though.  Since I'm also a librarian, I have a couple of boards that have to do with books, bookmarks, libraries, etc.  I am a bibliophile.

These first photos are all about unusual bookshelves.  If you've visited my Pinterest site, you may have noticed that all of my board titles consist of two words separated by a comma.  It's just part of my English teacher gimmick, so indulge me, please. 

Wouldn't this last idea be really cool in a high school library?  I wish I had the wall space!  

Alas, every inch of wall is covered with a full-out stuffed bookshelf, so it's a no-go for BNTHS.

 Ever wanted to visit a public library in a different city?  This country girl loves going to big-city libraries!  But I've not been to many, unfortunately. 

Dragging our boys through museums sapped all my dragging abilities and, now that they are grown, we're dragging grandchildren.  A museum or two and, on weekends, at least one church service and we're on the road back to Evergreen.

Thanks to Pinterest, I can visit every major public library in the civilized world.  It's not the same as being there in person, of course, but it's better than never visiting.

Although I do have a board named, "recommended, books" I want instead to show a couple of "smart, bookmark" photos.

One of the joys of my life is reading, and I am grateful to whomever taught me to read as a child.   I cannot remember a time when I was not a reader.  My parents both were.  Daddy had his newspaper, and mom always loved a book during nap time.  

Surprisingly, though, I don't have any memories of their reading to me.  It's as if I was born able to read, and my preferred entertainment was always at my disposal.  

Now here's a bit of craziness: I was finished with this post... done, I tell you, when Richard pointed out that today is Thursday.  What?   

What happened to Wednesday?  Then I remembered, I spent it at the Quilting Gallery Blog Hop Party.  (I'm in the J's.)  I hope you've entered my giveaway of a quilted Christmas stocking (and a few surprises) and that you visit the other blogs to enter their giveaways.

Pinterest interest

I guess I should start with an admission: I'm kinda hooked on Pinterest.  Not hooked like I go there several times a day, more like I go there at least a couple times a week.  But there it is...I am hooked.  


Hooked like I have 39 boards.  One is this board on forgotten places that are falling apart but are so hauntingly beautiful.


Hooked like I have well over 700 pins.  


But then what kind of librarian would I be if I didn't have a board with pins of public libraries from around the world.  I'm not going to see every beautiful library in every city, but we can check out many of them by looking at this one board.  Why not take advantage of the work that so many people have already done?  Besides, look at the beauty and the books!


And if one is going to pin photos of public libraries, why not go the extra step and recommend a few of those books?  


So I got hooked on pinning books.  I was going with classics, but I couldn't leave out my favorite young adult authors, I am a high school librarian, after all.  So, there's Shakespeare right next to Jodi Picoult.  


Except that I haven't put them in alphabetical order.  I considered it, mind you, but I thought perhaps that's going a little too far.  Possibly not, but once I alphabetize I'd have to keep it up, and that (trust me, I know this for certain) would take way more time than I can afford.


Books need bookmarks, so there's a bookmark board.  And books don't just sit on the floor, so there's a shelf board.  But then I decided that I do have more in my life than just work.  So I thought of other ways to use Pinterest.


Then I realized that I quilt.


And I sew.  


And I play with other crafts. 


So, I needed a board or two on sewing/quilting/crafts.  I ended up with 16, so far.  I won't list them all, but you get the idea that maybe I am a little obsessed with pinning crafts.  


In my defense, I like organizing, so I had to organize the boards in ways that I would be able to quickly and easily find what I want to find.  Yes, there's one on organizing.  

I guess that pretty much covers it.  I did some smart combinging: grandchildren go with sewing because it makes so much sense right now.  And I don't post photos of my grandchildren on any social media sites.
  
Well, it doesn't completely cover it.  Long ago of the things I discovered I appreciate beauty.  So there are some boards--rather like the first one I mentioned--that exist just because I appreciate beauty: visual arts, lace, embroidery, ironwork, trees (yes, I know, trees!).  


At least I'm not considering my interest in Pinterest as part of my workout routine or my healthy lifestyle.  No, I've decided I'd be realistic and pin only those things that are really in my life, like pecan desserts.  Now there's a board!!!
