Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Words and Phrases

In September of 2015 I wrote this SQI about using text in quilts. At the time I was collecting fabric with words, which was becoming an easier goal anytime I walked into a quilt shop. Today at least one piece in a line of fabric has some kind of lettering or words. And I have enough text fabric to make several quilts.

Nevertheless, words and how we use them still fascinate me. There are always words in my head. And I analyze sentences, usage, mechanics at the drop of a hat. Ask me if I've seen a sign (or a million) that needed correcting. These quilts don't need a red pen; they just want an audience.

Like the other 13,000+ quilts, these pins can be found in my "heart, quilts" board. In fact, they are in a new board called, "words and texts." Have you made a quilt with words? What about using fabric with text?

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Use Your Words

Reel Time by Zen Chic for Moda, 1 yd.: Use Your Words. How many times have you said or heard that phrase? I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Kaja and Ann's Ad Hoc Improv Quilts, which led me to Audrey's Quilty Folk, which reminded me that I have yet to use a particular stack of fabric.

A stack of fabric that took a while to collect. A stack of fabric with words. Now, I'm an English teacher. Words have been a big part of my life--be it teaching how to use them, how to write them, how to read them or to understand them. Words are important to me.

Hmm, maybe it's time to use my words. My word fabric. But not today. Today, and all of this week, I'm working on our guild quilt show. It's less than a week away! So there's lots of work to do. I'll take pictures and use my words. In the meantime, here's an SQI from 2015 that is about using your words. I hope you enjoy.

Secret Diary 8:Angela Moll~"The pages of my Secret Diaries are actual journal entries screen printed on fabric. The text records the flow of thoughts and the meandering of attention as I write on the screen with fabric dye. Each fabric page is a layering of different entries, the superimposition of a day onto the next one. I use the collaged & stitched diary fragments to speak about intimacy, communication, as well as privacy and isolation."

Pin It Weekly #279

Happy Weekly! I'm running a bit late this week. I've been busy writing and mailing these invitations to vendors for our guild show. Don't you love computers at times like this?

I haven't  been pinning so much as looking at things. I decided to play with the Silhouette a little and needed some inspiration. Here are a few things that I found which I like.
A step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own DIY decorative sign. Tutorial available at homewithlo.com

I really like the ones like this that look like a dictionary entry. Of course, I have handled a few dictionaries, so it should be no surprise.

"LOVE GROWS BEST IN LITTLE HOUSES JUST LIKE THIS" SIGN

Marriage Definition - Timber + Gray Design Co.

Scripture wood sign Proverbs 24 - living room wall decor - scripture wall art - bible verse sign - B
And I especially love the Bible quotes. I am thinking that I'll practice with a few and then make some for the girls each with their favorite Bible quote. It's to be sneaky and get that info without their knowing that may be the problem.

Excited to share this item from my #etsy shop: Go be great sign | signs with quotes | signs | farmhouse decor | signs for home | farmhouse sign | wood signs | bible quotes | rustic signs #homedecor #patiooutdoor #framed #signsforhome #farmhousesigns #farmhousedecor #woodsigns #signs #rustic #farmhouseliving #signswithquotes #livingroomdecor

I say I haven't been pinning much, but I still pinned a few quilts. I guess I can't help myself. I ran across several bookcase quilts

Happy pinning, everyone!

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: W O R D S

So true. Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog: Another Day at the Nursery: I heard an interview on the radio today while I was cutting out a project to take with me to an upcoming retreat. A song-writer (sorry that I missed his name) was talking about how he struggled for almost a month to write a song for a particular singer. In the interview he said something along the lines of not having the words for the song he wanted to write. "I have words. I have lots of words. I just couldn't find them," he said.

That statement reminded me of my own epiphany about words. A co-worker and I were talking about what we read, and I said I read just about anything. I gave her examples: Popular Mechanics, Smithsonian, anything quilting, blogs, books, articles I find on my phone, and so on. She laughed saying she does not spend that much time reading. And without thinking, I said, "I just need the words." That struck her as funny, but I was serious. I've since thought about it quite a bit and decided I do need words. So here are a few rarely used words...

This totally defines me… NYCTOPHILIA, my new word of the day.:

And would you like words on quilts? Well, here are a few from my "heart, quilts" board...

Share a good song in a quilt.: What a neat quilt. I love the idea for someone who looked forward to a birth but didn't get to see the little one grow up. Makes me think of Uncle Dave who i never got to meet.

Secret Diary 21: "To a different rhythm" 2005 ~ Angela Moll "I learned to sew about the time I learned to write. Today I keep on writing & sewing: I keep journals, compile field notes, & I make quilts. It often strikes me how very similar those activities are. How the sentences snake along the page in much the same way as a line of stitches through the fabric. In my current body of work I use screen printing as a means of bringing together my love for long hand writing & for the stitched li...:
